Strategic Communications

Cornell University
245 Day Hall
Ithaca, NY 14853

Communications is responsible for raising the awareness and visibility of Cornell University with internal and external audiences and key stakeholders. Our team coordinates communications efforts for major university initiatives, including Cornell’s presence in New York City and Washington, D.C. We develop and implement communications plans that leverage the platforms across University Communications and manage content for the university’s primary digital and media channels. The executive director also oversees Cornell’s licensing program, advising on fair-labor practices, permissions, and trademark use.

Communications includes:

  • Public Affairs and Campus Communications, which provide communications planning and message development to engage members of the Cornell community – including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and parents – and constituencies external to the university. We promote Cornell’s news and research, post university statements and messages to campus, share news of Cornell initiatives, and produce targeted, digital e-newsletters. We provide communications support for high-profile campus events. Our team includes a public affairs officer based in Washington, D.C, reflecting an increased emphasis on Cornell’s relationships with D.C. media, think tanks, and policymakers.
  • Web Communications oversees content for Cornell’s flagship university website – including the CornellCast video collection – and provides leadership and guidance to campus regarding effective and appropriate use of the web as a tool for external and internal communications.
  • New Media is charged with creating and overseeing the university’s central social media strategy and developing an online community where people can engage with Cornell’s global brand and forge lifelong relationships. New Media also monitors trends in digital media and makes recommendations for how the university should leverage emerging technologies in support of its mission and vision.
